SMOKE OPACITY METER IS NOW AVAILABLE

Wager's 7500 meter is a fully PC-based system that incorporates both SAE J1667 and New York State specifications.

NEW YORK STATE EMISSIONS INSPECTION

June 1, 2000 all Diesel fueled vehicles with a GVWR of 8,500 lbs. and above with the exception of
  • Authorized Emergency vehicles
  • Agricultural trucks and certain farm vehicles
  • Certain construction vehicles
  • Marine vehicles
  • Certain Military vehicles
operating in New York State can be pulled over for emissions inspection. The DOT or DEC officer will inspect air pollution control systems for operation and tampering. The officer will also conduct a smoke opacity test with a certified smoke meter according to SAE J-1667 procedures. If the tested vehicle is found to be tampered with or fails the smoke opacity the driver of that unit is subject to a fine. The penalties for failing a roadside inspection are $700.00 for the first violation and $1300.00 for the second and subsequent violations. The fine can be reduced to $150.00 for the first violation and $500.00 for the second and subsequent violation if the vehicle is repaired and passes a smoke emissions test within 30 days by an authorized New York State inspection station.

POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR EXCESSIVE SMOKE EMISSIONS

  • Restricted air intake system, (air filter, damaged intake piping)
  • Quality of fuel, (low BTU, low cetane, incorrect fuel rating)
  • Injection pump adjustment, (tampering, worn components, air fuel adjustment)
  • Quality of engine nozzles, (worn, low pressures, inoperative)
  • Valve and or Injector adjustment
  • Low engine cylinder temperature, (low pressures, low water temp)
  • Engine oil consumption, (dirty engine oil, worn valve guides or piston rings)
